Meghalaya Government to Strengthen Anti-Drug Laws and Involve Communities

Northeast Desk, 8th June: The Meghalaya government has recognized the urgent need to enhance legal measures and foster community involvement to combat drug trafficking. Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced on June 7 that the Law Department is intensively working to tighten regulations against drug traffickers.

“We need to bolster our laws, which is why we are seeking the input of the Dorbar Shnong (traditional institutions),” Lyngdoh stated during a consultative meeting focused on anti-drug initiatives.

In response to the escalating drug problem, over 60 Dorbar Shnongs from greater Shillong have committed to forming village defense parties (VDPs). These VDPs will assist the government in tackling the drug menace. Traditional institutions have been invited to submit their recommendations for amending The Meghalaya Village Defence Organisation Rules, 2008, within three weeks to a month.

Highlighting the importance of reconstituting VDPs, Lyngdoh said, “The various Dorbar Shnongs will prepare to establish these VDPs.” He further explained that the rules would be updated to address current challenges, and the VDPs would act as “foot soldiers” to support law enforcement in identifying potential drug traffickers.

This initiative is part of the Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM), launched in June 2023. The DREAM mission aims to create a “Drug Free Meghalaya” through coordinated efforts between the state and local communities.

By combining stringent laws with active community participation, Meghalaya aims to significantly reduce drug trafficking and abuse, ensuring a safer environment for its citizens.
