Joint Operation Leads to Arrest of Notorious Smuggler in Meghalaya

Northeast Desk, 8th June: A coordinated operation conducted by the Assam and Meghalaya police on the night of June 7, 2024, near Hallidayganj in Meghalaya’s Char Kasharipara area, resulted in the apprehension of a notorious international smuggler. The individual, identified as Sahinur Islam, alias Kasa, is involved in illegal trafficking of cattle and sugar into Bangladesh through Dhubri and South Salmara Mankachar district.

Led by Sub-Inspector (P) Bikash Saikia from Sukchar Police Station in South Salmara Mankachar district, the operation targeted Kasa, a veteran in smuggling activities in the region. Known for his involvement in cross-border smuggling networks, Kasa has been a prime target for law enforcement due to his extensive criminal history.

The successful arrest underscores the collaborative efforts between Assam and Meghalaya police to combat rampant cross-border smuggling activities. Kasa, operating from an area under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction, had evaded Assam’s law enforcement for some time, orchestrating various illegal activities, including attacks on police personnel.

Accused of hiring a gang to protect himself and carry out his illicit operations, Kasa’s criminal activities have led to multiple cases against him in Assam. His arrest marks a significant milestone in regional law enforcement efforts to curb smuggling and maintain security in the area.

Sub-Inspector (P) Saikia has played a pivotal role in apprehending several foreign livestock and sugar smugglers in recent months, alarming local criminals involved in smuggling activities. Following his apprehension, Kasa was sent to judicial custody in Dhubri, bringing him one step closer to justice.
