Tripura Police Detain Two Rohingya Nationals in Ambassa Subdivision

Northeast Desk, 8th June: Late on Friday night, Tripura Police detained two Rohingya nationals from the Ambassa subdivision under Khowai District. The incident occurred around 9 PM when police signaled an electric auto approaching Ambassa to stop at a naka checking point. Among the three individuals inside the auto, one managed to escape while the police detained the remaining two.

Upon interrogation, the detained individuals revealed themselves as Rohingya nationals. The police have announced their intention to produce them before the court today and seek police remand for further investigation.

This incident comes in the wake of heightened vigilance by security forces in the region. Earlier on May 28, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended Jalil Miah, a significant figure in a large-scale racket involving the trafficking of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas through the porous north-eastern borders.

Miah’s arrest, following a series of raids by the NIA, underscores the agency’s continued efforts to dismantle such nefarious networks. He had been absconding since November 2023 and was among the individuals for whom the NIA had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to their capture earlier this year.

The NIA’s operation, which initially began with the Assam Special Task Force (STF) in March 2023, has seen significant progress with the apprehension of 33 individuals connected to the case (RC-01/2023/NIA-GUW).
