Congress Working Committee Unanimously Requests Rahul Gandhi to Assume Role of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha
Guwahati, 8th June: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has passed a resolution urging Rahul Gandhi to take on the mantle of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, as announced by senior party leader KC Venugopal on Saturday. The unanimous decision underscores Rahul Gandhi’s suitability to lead the party’s parliamentary campaign.
“Rahul ji is the best person to lead this campaign inside the Parliament,” Venugopal affirmed during a press conference. Responding to queries regarding Gandhi’s acceptance of the position, Venugopal, the Congress General Secretary overseeing the organization, indicated that a decision would be forthcoming.
Reflecting on the prevailing atmosphere within the CWC, Venugopal noted a marked shift from four months ago, signaling the Congress party’s resurgence with renewed enthusiasm among its leaders and workers.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari echoed support for the resolution, lauding Gandhi’s fearlessness and fortitude. “Definitely he should become the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. This was the request of our working committee,” Tiwari asserted.
The resolution commended Rahul Gandhi’s contributions, particularly through his leadership of the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. These initiatives were hailed as pivotal moments in the nation’s political landscape, instilling optimism and assurance among the party’s cadre and electorate.
Furthermore, the resolution recognized Gandhi’s focused and articulate election campaign, attributing to him the centrality of safeguarding the Constitution in the 2024 elections. The PaanchNyay-Pachees Guarantee program, a cornerstone of the campaign, was highlighted as a product of Gandhi’s direct engagement with diverse communities during his yatras.
Despite acknowledging the party’s recent resurgence, the CWC acknowledged persistent challenges and reiterated the imperative of reclaiming the Congress party’s prominent position in India’s political arena. “We have recovered and revived, no doubt, but we still have a long way to go to occupy the pre-eminent position the party once held in the nation’s political life. The people of India have spoken—the Congress has been given another chance. It is now up to us to build on it. We must and we will,” the resolution affirmed.
The extended CWC meeting witnessed the participation of key figures, including Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, DK Shivakumar, and Revanth Reddy, among others.
