Manipur: 600 Individuals Seek Refuge in Assam Amid Unrest in Jiribam

Northeast Desk, 10th June: In the wake of escalating unrest in Jiribam district, Manipur, over 600 individuals have sought refuge in Assam’s Cachar district over the past four days, as per police reports. The turmoil, triggered by the discovery of a body on June 6, has led to instances of mob violence resulting in the burning of homes and government structures.

Confirming the influx of displaced individuals, Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, highlighted that the majority have found shelter in the Lakhipur area. Emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining law and order along the border, Mahatta underscored the deployment of additional police and commando units to bolster security measures.

Despite the absence of formal shelter camps, Mahatta assured the public that security measures have been significantly heightened. Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai echoed this sentiment during a visit to the border areas, affirming that the violence in Manipur has not spilled over into Cachar. Rai disclosed that approximately 600 residents from Manipur, belonging to both Kuki and Meitei linguistic groups, have sought refuge in the district, finding support among relatives and friends.

Addressing the ongoing situation, plans for a peace meeting on Monday were mentioned by Rai to foster harmony among the diverse linguistic communities residing in the area. As tensions persist in Jiribam, the solidarity and support extended by Assam’s Cachar district serve as a beacon of hope amidst the prevailing unrest.
