Tensions Erupt in Jogighopa Following Police Shooting Incident

Guwahati, 12th June: Tensions have surged in Jogighopa, Bongaigaon district, following an alleged police shooting incident involving local residents. The clash took place in Boalimari during a routine patrol by officers from the Alga River police station in Majeralga.

According to reports, the altercation began when police officers allegedly assaulted two youths who were sitting by the roadside in the evening. The incident incited anger among the locals, leading to an agitated mob surrounding the police team. In response to an attempted attack by the mob wielding sticks, the police fired a warning shot into the air, escalating the situation further.

This confrontation has heightened tensions in the area, with residents expressing outrage over the police’s actions.

This incident follows a tragic event in May in Jogighopa, Goalpara district, where a high-powered conductor wire struck a group of laborers working near an electric cable on a high-power tower line. The incident resulted in the death of Zahirul Islam due to electrocution, and four others—Shafiqul Islam, Mominul Islam, Aqidul Islam, and Mahinur Islam—sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to Goalpara Solace Hospital in critical condition.

The recent shooting incident has added to the growing unrest in the region, with calls for an investigation into the police’s conduct and measures to address the community’s grievances.
