Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu Proposes Women’s Reservation in State Assembly by 2029

Northeast Desk, 13th June: In a significant move towards bolstering women’s representation in Arunachal Pradesh’s legislative framework, Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced plans to introduce 33 percent reservation for women MLAs in the state Assembly by 2029. Addressing the media shortly after his oath-taking ceremony, Khandu emphasized the BJP’s commitment to women empowerment, citing the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill during PM Modi’s previous term. He pledged similar action at the state level, ensuring greater participation of women in governance.

This announcement follows the historic induction of Dasanglu Pul into Arunachal Pradesh’s cabinet, marking the first time in two decades that a woman has held a ministerial position in the state. Pul, who represents the Hayuliang constituency, was sworn in amidst dignitaries including Union Ministers Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, and chief ministers from neighboring states.

Dasanglu Pul’s journey into the cabinet began with her election in a 2016 by-election, succeeding her late husband, former Chief Minister Kalikho Pul. Her subsequent re-elections in 2019 and 2024 underscore her rising influence as one of the few prominent women leaders in Arunachal Pradesh. Before assuming ministerial duties, Pul served as an advisor to the Women and Child Development department, advocating for policies crucial to women’s welfare.

With Arunachal Pradesh currently boasting four women MLAs, including Tsering Lhamu, Chakat Aboh, and Nyabi Jini Dirchi, Khandu’s proposal for legislative reservation aims to further empower women across decision-making bodies in the state.
