CPIM Alleges Attacks on Opposition, Seeks Voter List Extension in Tripura Panchayat Polls
Northeast Desk, 14th June: Jitendra Chaudhury, the secretary of CPIM Tripura committee and leader of opposition, has written to State Election Commissioner Saradindu Chaudhury, alleging attacks on opposition workers by BJP supporters. In his letter, Chaudhury highlighted incidents of attacks on opposition supporters’ houses, vandalism of CPI(M) offices, and physical assaults on activists across the state since the Lok Sabha election results.
Chaudhury specifically mentioned incidents in Boxanagar and Salema, where CPI(M) representatives were allegedly assaulted, leading to several block offices becoming inaccessible due to threats from ruling BJP miscreants.
Due to these incidents, CPIM has demanded a 10-day extension for the last date of claim and objection on the voters’ list for the upcoming three-tier Panchayat polls. The party seeks adequate time to scrutinize the voter list and ensure proper segregation at the Panchayat and Ward levels.
The Tripura State Election Commission has already initiated preparations for the polls, aiming to conclude them by the first week of August. Currently, there are 2,650 polling stations identified across 35 blocks, with the draft voter list containing 12,95,086 voters. The period for claims and objections on the draft list will continue until July 24, following which it will be finalized.
