Manipur Government Suspends Three Doctors Amid Crisis in Jiribam District
Northeast Desk, 14th June: In response to escalating violence and a surge in internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking refuge in Jiribam, Manipur, the state government has taken disciplinary action against three senior doctors for failing to report to their duties at the district hospital.
Effective June 13, Dr Oinam Bisu Singh, Dr Laishram Oken Singh, and Dr Feiga Luckson Gangmei have been suspended pending disciplinary proceedings. The decision was made following their non-compliance with a government directive to join their assigned posts at the Jiribam district hospital.
The suspension order, issued by the joint secretary of the Manipur Health and Family Welfare Department, cites Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services Rules, 1965, which mandates doctors to remain at their headquarters in Imphal without leaving without permission.
The unrest in Jiribam, which erupted on June 6 and resulted in the destruction of approximately 100 houses, has displaced around 1000 individuals, including women and children. The district hospital is now under heightened pressure to provide medical care to the displaced population.
The suspension of the doctors underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring essential medical services amidst the ongoing crisis in Jiribam.
