Sikkim: Tourists Stranded in Lachung, Mangan District Await Rescue Amidst Heavy Rainfall and Landslides

Northeast Desk, 14th June: Approximately 1200 domestic and 15 foreign tourists, including 2 from Thailand, 3 from Nepal, and 10 from Bangladesh, find themselves stranded in Lachung, Mangan District of Sikkim due to road blockages caused by heavy rainfall and landslides.

Local authorities have confirmed the safety of all stranded tourists and have advised them to remain in their current locations, avoiding unnecessary risks. They reassured that there are ample food supplies and rations available for everyone affected.

Efforts for their evacuation are underway, with the Chief Secretary’s office of the Government of Sikkim engaging in discussions with the Ministry of Government of India to arrange airlifting operations, contingent upon favorable weather conditions. Alternatively, plans for evacuation by road are also being explored.

The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim is actively coordinating with the District Administration, Police Department, and local tourism stakeholders to ensure the safe and timely evacuation of the stranded tourists. They have assured comprehensive support and assistance throughout this challenging period.

It is clarified that while Lachung remains cut off due to the natural calamity, other parts of Sikkim are accessible and deemed safe for travel. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to provide necessary updates and ensure the well-being of all affected individuals.
