Manipur Cabinet Initiates Measures for IDP Rehabilitation Amidst Crisis

Northeast Desk, 14th June: In response to the escalating crisis causing internal displacement within Manipur, the state Cabinet has taken decisive steps by forming a Cabinet Sub-Committee under Rule 13 of the Rules of Business of the Government of Manipur. This Sub-Committee is specifically mandated to oversee the rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) within the state.

Headed by Minister of Works and YAS, K Govindas Singh, the Sub-Committee includes Minister of Water Resources and Relief and Disaster Management Awangbow Newmai, Minister of Medical Health and FW and IPR Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, and Minister of AH and Vety and Transport Khashim Vashum as its members. Commissioner-cum-Home Gyanprakash Huirem has been appointed as the Member Secretary, directly reporting to the Chief Minister.

The primary objectives of the Sub-Committee encompass identifying the grievances of IDPs currently residing in relief camps, conducting assessments of their needs and requirements, supervising measures for their resettlement and rehabilitation, and overseeing the identification of suitable temporary relocation sites.

In another significant decision, the Manipur Cabinet has approved the conduct of local elections for Autonomous District Councils (ADC), Panchayats, and Municipalities jointly around September 2024. The Hill Areas Committee (HAC) will be consulted for their views regarding ADC elections, ensuring inclusive decision-making.

Moreover, the Cabinet has directed Deputy Commissioners to expedite the assessment of flood damage within a week. Immediate relief measures have been authorized, including providing Rs 10,000 per flood-affected family to alleviate their immediate hardships.

These proactive measures underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the people of Manipur, aiming to restore normalcy and ensure the well-being of affected communities.
