Nirmal Chettri Joins Restoration Efforts Amidst Teesta River Floods in Sikkim’s Melli
Northeast Desk, 15th June: Former Indian footballer Nirmal Chettri has stepped up to aid in the restoration efforts in Melli, Sikkim, amidst the escalating havoc caused by the swollen Teesta River. The recent surge in water levels has inundated the Melli ground, necessitating urgent measures to build embankments and mitigate the flood’s impact on this border town in North Bengal.
Chettri, renowned for his contributions to Indian football, has actively participated alongside local residents in constructing embankments to contain the advancing waters of the Teesta River. His presence underscores a collective resolve to protect Melli from potential disaster and safeguard the town’s inhabitants.
Expressing deep concern for the town’s safety, Chettri has advocated for permanent solutions to strengthen Melli’s river banks against future threats. He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to shield vulnerable communities residing along the river from recurring floods.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by a comprehensive inspection led by Ms. Annapurna Alley, Deputy Commissioner of Namchi, on May 29th. The inspection team, including DC Namchi and other officials, assessed the extent of damage caused by the rising water levels in areas such as Melli ground, Yes Bank Limited (YBL), West Bengal Melli, and Bhalu Khola.
The heavy rainfall across the region has resulted in significant destruction, with the water levels breaching the boundaries of Melli Stadium and inundating the surrounding areas. The flooding has also disrupted road connectivity in North Sikkim, isolating several locations and presenting challenges for residents and authorities alike in managing the aftermath.
Chettri’s proactive involvement highlights the spirit of community resilience and solidarity in the face of natural calamities, reinforcing efforts to restore normalcy and fortify Melli against future environmental challenges.
