Meghalaya Police Open Fire on Kidnappers During Escape Attempt, Rescue Truck Driver
Northeast Desk, 19th June: Meghalaya police on June 19 opened fire on four kidnappers after they attempted to escape custody in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi district. The kidnappers were involved in the abduction of a truck driver, according to Ri Bhoi police reports.
Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, reported that early on June 19, information was received about highway robbers assaulting truck drivers in Umtrew. Police from Umiam and Umsning police stations were alerted. Umsning PS discovered the robbers in a white Scorpio vehicle kidnapping a truck driver and heading towards Guwahati.
To intercept the suspects, the police set up a checkpoint. In the evening, the Scorpio was spotted again, and despite police attempts to stop the vehicle, it tried to run over the officers on duty. The police eventually arrested the four suspects after they attempted to flee into a jungle area.
At Nongpoh police station, the suspects confessed to the attempted kidnapping and extortion. The accused have been identified as Pradip Gogoi (38), Tulan Phukan (36), Pranjal Gogoi (38), and Deep Das (28). The truck driver was safely rescued, according to the police.
This incident underscores the vigilance and swift action of Meghalaya police in handling criminal activities and ensuring the safety of citizens.
