VPP’s Historic Win Prompts Reflection Among Regional Parties in Meghalaya
Northeast Desk, 19th June: Following the Voice of the People Party (VPP)’s historic victory in the Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya, the United Democratic Party (UDP) on June 19 expressed that the VPP’s future political impact and whether it will overshadow other regional parties will become evident over time.
UDP leader Mayralborn Syiem highlighted the importance of the VPP proving its capabilities in the upcoming elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
The recent Lok Sabha elections saw setbacks for the UDP and other regional parties, with alliances with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being cited as a factor affecting their electoral performance. Syiem noted that coalition politics require compromises and mentioned that the central leadership would consider whether to reassess their relationship with the BJP.
Despite the loss, Syiem acknowledged and respected the citizens’ mandate, indicating a commitment to reflect and adapt moving forward.
