Ima gi Meira Condemns Union Home Minister’s Handling of Manipur Crisis, Calls for Comprehensive Approach
Northeast Desk, 19th June: Ima gi Meira, a prominent women’s organization in Manipur, has voiced strong opposition to decisions made during a recent high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah concerning the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The meeting, held in Delhi on June 17, has sparked widespread criticism across various sectors, particularly regarding the Union Minister’s changing stance on the conflict.
Addressing the media, Thokchom Sujata, Convenor of Ima gi Meira, expressed dismay over what she described as inconsistent portrayals of the Manipur crisis by central leadership. Initially attributing the conflict to foreign militants, the narrative has since shifted to framing it as an ethnic clash between the Kuki and Meitei communities. Sujata emphasized that this inconsistency has only served to confuse the people of Manipur.
Ima gi Meira particularly objected to the decision to deploy additional central forces, arguing that the current troop presence has not succeeded in quelling the violence. Sujata stressed that merely increasing troop numbers is not a viable solution and urged the central government to adopt more effective strategies and mechanisms to bring about peace in the region.
Furthermore, Sujata questioned the rationale behind convening the high-level meeting without the presence of Manipur’s Chief Minister, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio. She called for a fresh meeting that includes the Chief Minister to ensure comprehensive and inclusive discussions on resolving the crisis.
In a direct appeal to the Prime Minister, Sujata urged immediate attention to the escalating crisis in Manipur, underscoring the urgency for decisive and meaningful intervention to restore peace and stability in the state.
Ima gi Meira’s stance reflects growing dissatisfaction among local organizations and communities regarding the handling of the Manipur crisis, emphasizing the need for coherent and collaborative efforts to address the complex issues affecting the region.
