Elephants Intrude Homes in Assam, Highlighting Human-Wildlife Conflict

Guwahati, 19th June: In a troubling instance of human-wildlife conflict, two elephants barged into a household’s kitchen and cow shed in Samaguri, Assam, on June 18, leaving destruction in their wake. The incident, which caused significant damage to the property, saw the elephants swiftly depart the area afterward, though residents remain apprehensive about potential follow-up attacks.

This event underscores the escalating frequency of such encounters, underscoring the persistent issue of human-elephant conflict prevailing in the region. Residents are on edge following the intrusion, grappling with the looming threat of further wildlife disturbances.

In a separate incident in South Dharamtul, Jagiroad, tragedy struck when a wild elephant fatally attacked a villager named Teron on June 15. Teron, a resident of Mohkhali village under Morigaon district, fell victim to the elephant’s aggression while on the verandah of his home.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict in Assam. Local authorities and wildlife conservationists continue their efforts to manage these encounters, seeking solutions to ensure the safety of both humans and elephants coexisting in the region.
