Incessant Rainfall Claims Two Lives, Affects Thousands in Meghalaya

Northeast Desk, 19th June: Meghalaya has been grappling with the aftermath of incessant rainfall in recent days, which has tragically resulted in the loss of two lives and affected over 3,000 people, according to the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Probino Warbah (48) from Tynring Village, East Khasi Hills, and Kantly Maram (49) from Nongkroh Rambrai Village, West Khasi Hills. Warbah lost his life due to drowning on June 10, while Maram was fatally struck by lightning on June 12, as reported by MSDMA officials.

The impact of continuous rainfall since June 10 has been widespread, affecting 3,037 individuals across 42 villages spanning six districts of the state.

In response to the situation, authorities have issued directives to all districts to activate their Incident Response Teams (IRT), ensure District Emergency Operation Centres (DEOC) remain operational 24×7, disseminate advisories to the public, and promptly initiate relief measures to assist affected communities.

The ongoing rainfall has underscored the need for coordinated efforts to mitigate further risks and provide essential assistance to those affected in Meghalaya’s affected districts.
