Assam Achieves Milestones in Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen
Guwahati, 19th June: Assam’s commitment to cleanliness and environmental sustainability has been underscored by recent achievements highlighted by the Chief Minister’s Office on X. The state has successfully attained 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) status under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II, marking a significant milestone in sanitation coverage.
Since March 5, 2019, Assam has declared all its 25,214 villages as ODF Plus, ensuring comprehensive sanitation facilities across the state. This accomplishment reflects dedicated efforts and effective collaborations among stakeholders, reinforcing Assam’s commitment to public health and hygiene.
In addition to sanitation, Assam has made substantial progress in waste management initiatives. Currently, solid waste management covers 8,154 villages, while 23,547 villages benefit from liquid waste management as of April 10, 2024. The state has also established 103 operational Plastic Waste Management Units, with plans for complete block coverage by 2024, aiming to mitigate environmental impact through responsible waste disposal practices.
Furthering its commitment to sustainable practices, Assam has implemented community-based biogas plants across 13 districts under the GOBARdhan scheme. These plants facilitate waste-to-energy conversion, aligning with Assam’s goal to achieve district-wide coverage by 2024 and promote eco-friendly solutions for organic waste management.
Assam’s comprehensive approach to cleanliness, sanitation, waste management, and renewable energy underscores its dedication to building a healthier and sustainable future for its citizens. These achievements stand as testament to the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen and the concerted efforts of government bodies, communities, and stakeholders towards a cleaner and greener Assam.
