IMD Issues Severe Weather Warnings for Northeast India Amid Cyclonic Circulation

Northeast Desk, 19th June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of warnings for heavy rainfall across Assam and neighboring states in the northeastern region of India, attributing it to a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and strong southwesterly to southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal.

Over the next five days, IMD forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Specifically, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh until June 21. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on June 19 and June 22.

Of particular concern are Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, where IMD has highlighted the potential for severe weather. Isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, are expected on June 19. Residents and local authorities are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard against the impact of these severe weather conditions.

The warnings underscore the IMD’s commitment to alerting communities and authorities in advance, aiming to minimize risks associated with heavy rainfall and potential flooding in the northeastern states of India.
