Assam: Wild Elephant Found Dead in Udalguri’s Nalapara Area; Sparks Human-Elephant Conflict Concerns
Guwahati, 20th June: A tragic incident unfolded in the Nalapara area of Bhergaon, Udalguri district, where a wild elephant was found dead in the Nala River.
The conflict, affecting vast areas including Dimakuchi, Nalapara, Bagrital, Rajagarh, Tankibasti, Bamunjuli, and Badlapara, sees large wild elephants frequently descending from forests in search of food and water.
In the latest incident, a 60-year-old wild elephant was discovered dead in the river. The exact cause of death remains unknown, but District Forest Officer (DFO) Hirendra Nath Basumatary speculates it could be due to illness or complications from childbirth, possibly linked to the Barnadi Sanctuary area.
Veterinary doctors and forest officials from Barnadi Sanctuary have arrived at the scene to conduct a post-mortem examination. The findings are expected to shed light on the cause of the elephant’s death.
Meanwhile, the previous night saw several houses in Bagritala and Dimakuchi destroyed by elephants, which also ravaged crops. Lavram Boro, president of the Dimakushi regional committee of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), has made an urgent appeal to the forest department and the Assam government to address the ongoing conflict between humans and elephants.
