Mizoram: Intensified Crackdown on Illegal Alcohol in Aizawl Enforces Community Service Penalties

Northeast Desk, 22nd June: As crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales and consumption ramp up in Aizawl, individuals found guilty under Section 6 (2) and (3) of The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act, 2019, face community service as part of their punishment. Section 6 (2) addresses the unlawful consumption of alcohol, while Section 6 (3) pertains to drinking in public places or causing disturbances while intoxicated.

The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department recently issued a warning via social media, stating, “If you want to avoid ending up as a public janitor wearing a blue waist coat, stay away from these defiant behaviours. You better stop ‘Spotting’.” The term ‘Spotting’ is slang in Mizoram for the quick act of drinking alcohol on the roadside while keeping an eye out for law enforcement.

Earlier this month, Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar launched a major campaign to curb illegal alcohol sales in Aizawl’s notorious ‘A senchi lane/liquor lane’ in the Vaivakawn Zohnuai area. This ongoing operation is a joint effort between the Excise and Narcotics Department and the Vaivakawn community.

The crackdown has resulted in significant seizures of various types of alcohol from January 1 to June 21, 2024:

  • Rakzu/Local liquor: 31,715 liters
  • Fermented Rice: 58,198 tins
  • Pots: 1,046 units
  • Yeast: 33.274 kg
  • IMFL (750 ml): 8,411 bottles
  • IMFL (375 ml): 1,232 bottles
  • IMFL (180 ml): 3,204 bottles
  • Beer (650 ml): 103 bottles
  • Beer (500 ml): 13,500 cans
  • Beer (300 ml): 21 cans
  • FML (1 Liter): 45 bottles
  • FML (700 ml): 101 bottles
  • BEDC: 1,278.800 liters

The ongoing enforcement aims to deter illegal alcohol consumption and sales, promoting adherence to the prohibition laws in Mizoram.
