Assam Floods: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reports Kushiyara River Above Danger Level, Over 2 Lakh Affected

Guwahati, 24th June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on his X handle that the River Kushiyara in Karimganj is flowing above the danger level as of June 23, 2024. The state recorded an average rainfall of 5.9 mm, exacerbating the flood situation in nine districts, affecting 22 revenue circles, 793 villages, and 2,04,896 people.

Despite a marginal improvement in the flood situation, with water levels of major rivers showing a receding trend, over two lakh people remain affected. The worst-hit district is Karimganj, with over one lakh people impacted, followed by Cachar and Darrang with over 50,000 and nearly 30,000 affected respectively.

The state has set up 107 relief camps and 104 relief centers, currently sheltering 12,081 people. In total, more than 75,000 people have sought refuge in these relief facilities.

This year’s floods, landslides, and storms have claimed 39 lives so far. The floodwaters have damaged over 800 villages and 4,274.13 hectares of crop areas across the state. Critical infrastructure, including embankments, roads, and bridges, has also been severely affected.

The affected districts include Bajali, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Kamrup, Karimganj, and Nalbari. Despite the cessation of rainfall over the last two days, the situation remains dire, particularly in Karimganj, where the River Kushiyara continues to pose a significant threat.
