Flood Situation in Assam Improves as Rainfall Declines
Guwahati, 25th June: As Assam battles the aftermath of severe flooding, there’s a glimmer of relief on Tuesday as the water levels in major rivers recede, alleviating the plight of affected residents. According to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the number of people impacted has reduced to 1.7 lakh, marking a significant improvement from the over two lakh affected just days ago.
The districts currently grappling with the aftermath include Bajali, Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Kamrup, Karimganj, Nagaon, and Hojai. Karimganj emerges as the worst-hit district with 96,440 people submerged in floodwaters, followed by Cachar with over 52,400 affected individuals and Darrang with nearly 10,802.
Tragically, this year’s toll from floods, landslides, and storms has risen to 40, with a recent drowning reported in Cachar on Monday. The Kushiara river in Karimganj remains a concern, flowing above the danger mark, while other rivers and their tributaries show signs of receding due to decreased rainfall in the past two days.
Currently, 13,094 people seek refuge in 149 relief camps scattered across the affected districts, providing essential support amidst the crisis. The floodwaters have wreaked havoc on Assam’s infrastructure, damaging embankments, roads, bridges, and over 2,273.44 hectares of vital crop area.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring relief operations reach those in need promptly. The focus remains on restoring normalcy and providing necessary assistance to the affected population as Assam navigates through this challenging period.
