NIA Charges Four in Assam Terror Plot Targeting Army Camps
Guwahati, 26th June: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has charge-sheeted four individuals, including a cadre of the Myanmar-based banned terror outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), for their involvement in a conspiracy to target army camps in Assam as part of an anti-India agenda.
According to an NIA statement, two motorcycle-borne ULFA-I cadres lobbed grenades at the military station in Lichubari, Jorhat district, on December 14 of the previous year. This attack was part of a larger conspiracy to target army establishments across Assam.
The incident occurred less than a month after a similar grenade attack at an army camp in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district. On December 15, ULFA-I issued a press release claiming responsibility for these attacks.
The NIA revealed that the conspiracy behind both attacks was masterminded from Myanmar by ULFA-I self-styled (SS) captain Abhijeet Gogoi, also known by several aliases, along with ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah. Another key conspirator was identified as the outfit’s SS Brigadier Arunudoy Dohutia.
The NIA’s investigation in the Jorhat case led to the arrest of three accused: Biplab Baruah, Biraj Kachari, and Achyut Gogoi. These three, along with the absconding SS Captain Aicheng Asom, were charge-sheeted on Tuesday in a special NIA court in Guwahati.
