Assam Excise Department Cracks Down on Illegal Liquor Factory in Kokrajhar
Guwahati, June 28: In a major crackdown, the Assam Excise Department has uncovered an illegal liquor manufacturing facility at Somorpur, located under the Bishmuri Police outpost in Kokrajhar District. Acting on credible intelligence provided by the Guwahati Excise Department, a team conducted a raid on June 23, seizing a substantial cache of materials used in the illicit production of alcohol.
The seized items include:
- Machine for fixing caps: 1 unit
- Steel container VAT for blending: 1 unit
- Plastic storage tanks (2000 L capacity): 2 units
- Suspected spirit: 20 liters
- Holograms: 51,000 units
- Bottle caps: 95,200 units
- PET bottles: 10,270 units
- Glass bottles: 35,850 units
- Fake labels: 34,550 units
- Cartons: 6,000 units
- Caramel: 100 kilograms
Despite the success of the raid, the main accused, Swmdwn Basumatary, remains at large. The Kokrajhar Excise Department has issued notices for Minati Brahma and Gopinath Brahma, along with Khanteshwar Basumatary, to report despite their current absence.
AK Bayan, speaking on behalf of the Excise Department, emphasized that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal and counterfeit liquor production and distribution in Assam. He underscored the department’s commitment to strict enforcement against such activities, particularly amidst efforts by the Assam Government to regulate liquor prices to boost revenue.
The raid underscores the challenges posed by illegal liquor operations, highlighting the department’s proactive stance in safeguarding public health and safety.
