Arunachal DDMA Demolishes Shops to Mitigate Disaster Risks

Northeast Desk, 29th June: In response to recent incidents of landslides, floods, and road blockades across Itanagar, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Arunachal Pradesh took decisive action by demolishing six shops located at 6 Kilo, Arunachal Pradesh.

The DDMA’s action follows a public notice issued on June 24, mandating residents living near landslide-prone zones, hills, valleys, hill slopes, flood paths, rivers, and nallahs to immediately vacate vulnerable areas. The notice warned of eviction drives to remove any structures obstructing the natural flow of water.

Key concerns highlighted in the notice include the construction of residential and commercial buildings over natural drains, impeding rainwater drainage. Additionally, the DDMA pointed out the risk of blockages caused by construction materials dumped along roadsides, leading to debris accumulation in roads, nallahs, and culverts.

Under the authority granted by the Disaster Management Act 2005, the DDMA emphasized the necessity of vacating areas prone to landslides, hill slopes, flood paths, rivers, and nallahs to prevent potential loss of human lives. Residents disregarding these warnings were cautioned that they would assume all risks and would not be eligible for compensation in case of disasters, including those resulting from unauthorized construction and land modification.

Moreover, the DDMA assured residents that in the event of any natural disaster, assistance could be sought from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

The demolition of shops at 6 Kilo underscores the DDMA’s proactive approach to mitigate disaster risks and ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas across Arunachal Pradesh.
