Guwahati, 3rd July: Nagaon police in Assam made history by registering the state’s first FIR under the provisions of the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), on Monday.
Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka confirmed that the FIR was lodged at Nagaon Sadar Police Station at 12:32 pm. The complaint was filed by a rickshaw-puller reporting the theft of his mobile phone and Rs 7,000 in cash from his residence on Sunday night.
The case has been registered under Section 305(a) of BNS, which deals with theft in a dwelling house or means of transportation, among other places, prescribing imprisonment for up to seven years along with a fine. Previously, similar offenses were covered under Section 380 of the now-defunct Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Police sources indicated that an investigation is underway to recover the stolen items and apprehend the perpetrator responsible for the crime. The implementation of BNS, along with Bharatiya Nagarik Surksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), marks a significant overhaul in India’s criminal justice framework effective from Monday.
