Meghalaya Police Arrest Key Accused in Armed Robbery Near Assam-Meghalaya Border

Northeast Desk, 3rd July: The Meghalaya Police have arrested Sahadev Basumatary, one of four armed miscreants involved in a robbery on June 18, 2024, near Beldongpara village, Assam’s Goalpara district, close to the Assam-Meghalaya border near Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills district.

Basumatary was apprehended on July 1 at the Assam-Meghalaya border following the surrender of another accused, Turti Basumatary, who turned himself in to the North Garo Hills Police. Turti Basumatary surrendered with a semi-automatic pistol containing two live rounds.

The robbers, riding an Aprilia Scooty (AS18J-0181) and a black Bajaj Pulsar 220 (AS18 E-7925), intercepted and looted Rs 80,000 in cash, personal documents, and two mobile phones. Villagers from Beldongpara intercepted and detained the Scooty and Pulsar 220 on June 18, but the riders managed to escape. The villagers handed the recovered bike over to Mendipathar Thana staff, and an FIR was filed by the victims on June 19, leading to the registration of the case at Mendipathar Police Station.

The police launched an intense search operation led by Deputy SP, Special Ops, and his team from North Garo Hills, focusing on suspected hideouts in neighboring Assam. Another accused, Sunil Boro (33), was arrested on June 24 from Dhupdhara PS jurisdiction along with the Scooty used in the crime.

The search for the last accused, Kaltu Rabha, is ongoing. Meghalaya Police have stated that all involved are habitual offenders previously involved in multiple dacoity cases in Assam and Meghalaya.
