Manipur Schools to Remain Closed on July 5th and 6th Due to Flooding
Northeast Desk, 4th July: The Department of Education-Schools, Manipur, has announced the closure of all schools in the state on the 5th and 6th of July, 2024, due to rising river levels and subsequent flooding caused by incessant rain. This decision affects Government, Government Aided, Private, and Central Schools.
Zonal Education Officers and DI of Schools have been instructed to inform all concerned parties and take necessary actions.
The flooding has caused significant damage across the state, with at least two people reported dead after drowning in the Senapati River. The state government had initially announced school closures until Thursday, July 4th, but extended the closure due to the worsening flood situation.
According to a senior official, the Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, and the Kongba River overflowed at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. These breaches have led to the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.
The overflowing Imphal River has inundated localities in the Singjamei and Langthabal assembly constituencies in Imphal West, while water from the Iril River has submerged many areas in the Kshetrigao and Wangkhei assembly constituencies in Imphal East.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to stay safe and heed evacuation orders where necessary.
