Tripura Headmaster Suspended Following Physical Punishment of Student
Northeast Desk, 5th July: The District Education Officer of Unakoti district in Tripura suspended the Headmaster of Depacherra S B School in Pecharthal on Thursday, following directives from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The suspension came in response to media reports exposing the headmaster, Binay Priya Chakma, for physically punishing a female student on June 28.
Initial investigations revealed that the student, identified as Aparna Reang, was subjected to severe physical punishment by the headmaster. The suspension order cited violations of the Rights of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which prohibits physical punishment and mental harassment under section 17(1), making them punishable offences.
The order emphasized that physical punishment not only impacts the mental and physical health of students but also disrupts the overall teaching-learning environment. It further referenced the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act, 2015, highlighting specific provisions in Articles 39(e) and 39(f) that safeguard children in alternative care settings.
Under the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules, 1965, the headmaster was immediately suspended pending further inquiry into the incident.
