Assam: House Washed Away in Dhubri Amidst Rising River Levels and Severe Flooding

Guwahati, 6th July: A house in Dhubri’s North Tokrachora in Assam was abruptly washed away by a sudden surge in River Gangadhar following incessant rainfall in the district. The house belonged to Gajen Sen, and the abrupt change in the river’s course has wreaked havoc, not only for the Sens but also affecting nearly 7 lakh people in the district.

Severe flooding has caused water levels in both River Brahmaputra and River Gangadhar to rise dangerously. Over 100 bighas of agricultural land have been washed away, and persistent rains have exacerbated the situation. Villagers have expressed frustration over the lack of effective government intervention to combat erosion. One resident stated that without a scientific strategy to manage the river’s course, there is a growing fear that the land in North Tokrachora Part-I settlement could be completely eroded away.

In response to the disaster, 23 relief camps have been established across Dhubri, providing shelter to those displaced by the floodwaters. The impact of the floods has been widespread across various regions within the district, with the population affected as follows:

  • Dhubri revenue village: 1,92,562
  • South Salmara (Dhubri section): 2,71,933
  • Chapar: 25,788
  • Athani: 47,892
  • Gauripur: 1,26,842
  • Bilasipara: 1,11,522

Additionally, 2354.15 hectares of crop area have been damaged by the floodwaters, posing a significant threat to the district’s agricultural output.
