Tripura Urges Establishment of BCAS Regional Office at Agartala
Northeast Desk, 7th July: Tripura’s Transport Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, has penned a letter to Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, urging the establishment of a Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) office in the state.
Highlighting the necessity, Chowdhury noted that 17 new BCAS offices are slated for establishment nationwide. He emphasized that Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala ranks as the second busiest airport in Northeast India after Guwahati’s LGBI Airport, handling an annual traffic of approximately 1.3 million passengers. The recently inaugurated international category Terminal Building at MBB Airport underscores its modern facilities.
Chowdhury further emphasized the readiness for international flight operations between Agartala and Chittagong, Bangladesh, pending formal inauguration approval from the Ministry. Stressing the essential role of BCAS in airport operations, he highlighted that all airlines, businesses, contractors, and fuel pump operators at MBB Airport require BCAS clearance.
Despite these requirements and facilities, Tripura currently lacks a BCAS office, prompting Chowdhury’s urgent appeal for the sanctioning of a new Regional Office of BCAS at Agartala.
