Assam CM Unveils Comprehensive Three-Level Cancer Care Model

Guwahati, July 9 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a groundbreaking distributed cancer care model aimed at revolutionizing cancer treatment and diagnosis across the state. The model adopts a three-tier approach, ensuring comprehensive cancer care services are accessible to all residents.

At the pinnacle of this model is the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati, designated as the apex centre for cancer care in Assam. This institute serves as the central hub, offering advanced cancer treatment and specialized services.

Supporting the State Cancer Institute are five comprehensive cancer hospitals strategically located in Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Silchar, Diphu, and Dhubri. These hospitals provide extensive cancer care services, catering to patients in their respective regions and alleviating the burden on the central institute.

To ensure widespread access to cancer care, the model incorporates eleven diagnostic and daycare centres distributed throughout the state. These centres are situated in Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Jorhat, Darrang, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Goalpara. They offer essential diagnostic services and daycare treatments, bringing basic cancer care closer to communities in various districts.

This tiered system aims to enhance the accessibility and quality of cancer care services in Assam, providing a continuum of care from basic diagnostics to comprehensive treatment based on the facility’s level. The initiative reflects a significant step forward in addressing cancer care needs across the state, ensuring that all residents receive timely and effective medical attention.
