Assam Floods: Governor Reports Rising Casualties and Devastation
Guwahati, 9th July: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria addressed reporters on Tuesday, July 9, revealing alarming statistics and insights into the current flood crisis gripping the state. According to official reports as of July 8, the floods have claimed the lives of 72 individuals, with millions displaced and extensive damage inflicted on roads and infrastructure statewide.
Speaking at Jaipur airport during an official visit, Governor Kataria acknowledged the recurrent nature of floods in Assam, attributing them to the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries. “A flood-like situation more or less persists in Assam every year,” he remarked, highlighting the region’s perpetual vulnerability to such natural disasters.
Despite annual flood expectations, this year’s inundation has proven exceptionally severe. “This time there have been more casualties and broader areas affected,” noted Governor Kataria, underscoring the gravity of the current crisis. He commended the resilience and cooperation of local residents, emphasizing their pivotal role in supporting governmental and administrative efforts to manage and mitigate the disaster.
The Brahmaputra River, a lifeline for the northeastern state, has historically caused seasonal flooding, posing continuous challenges for disaster management. This year’s events underscore the imperative of sustained vigilance and enhanced infrastructure to better contend with recurring natural calamities in Assam.
