CPI(M) Moves Tripura High Court Over Nomination Filing Violence for Rural Polls

Northeast Desk, 17th July: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has approached the Tripura High Court, seeking intervention to address alleged violence during the nomination filing process for the upcoming August 8 rural polls, according to party leader Narayan Kar.

During a press conference, Kar, who is also the Left Front convener, explained that the party resorted to legal action after a meeting with the state election commissioner failed to resolve their concerns about the nomination process.

“We have demanded measures to ensure free and fair three-tier panchayat elections. Our demands include extending the last date for nomination filing, allowing online submission of papers, opening nomination filing windows at district headquarters for gram panchayats and panchayat samitis, and providing security for those intending to submit nominations,” Kar stated.

He further revealed that the CPI(M) submitted a writ petition to the Tripura High Court after their demands were unmet. The court has accepted the petition, and a division bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh will hear the plea on July 18. The last date for filing nomination papers is also July 18.

Kar mentioned that the state election commissioner assured them that the Director General of Police (DGP) had been instructed to provide security to candidates filing nomination papers. However, due to ongoing issues, the CPI(M) felt compelled to seek the court’s intervention to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful rural election.
