Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Holds Key Meetings on Water Security, Sanitation, and Farmer Welfare
Northeast Desk, 17th July: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma conducted important meetings with central government officials to address crucial issues regarding water security, sanitation, and initiatives for farmer welfare in the state.
In discussions with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Sangma emphasized pivotal projects such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), and the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP). The focus was on enhancing water supply infrastructure and improving flood disaster management strategies.
A significant portion of the talks centered around DRIP, with plans to repair and upgrade aging dams to strengthen water security. Additionally, the meetings highlighted the urgent need for effective flood relief operations in the state’s vulnerable areas.
In a separate meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Sangma addressed the unique challenges faced by Meghalaya’s farmers. He pointed out that the state’s community-based and clan-based land ownership systems often lack formal documentation, which impedes farmers’ access to benefits under the PM-KISAN scheme.
“We have submitted suggestions to the ministry for approval, which would enable our farmers to avail of PM-KISAN benefits, improving their livelihoods and welfare,” Sangma stated.
Officials stressed that these discussions are crucial for the state’s development, especially in managing flood disasters in the hilly terrain.
