Meghalaya: East Khasi Hills Police File FIRs Against Pressure Groups Conducting Document Checks

Northeast Desk, 18th July: The Superintendent of Police (SP) for East Khasi Hills district, Sylvester Nongtnger, confirmed the filing of six First Information Reports (FIRs) against pressure groups conducting document checks in various parts of the district under Section 35 (3) of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation.

SP Nongtnger stated, “Six cases have been registered in East Khasi Hills district. Although no arrests have been made, notices have been issued.” He emphasized the police’s proactive stance in addressing incidents related to these checks.

Responding to media queries regarding the actions of NGOs conducting checks, SP Nongtnger highlighted the police’s alertness across all sectors to prevent any adverse incidents involving the targets of these checks. He acknowledged sporadic incidents and assured prompt police responses to assaults or any unlawful actions, with ongoing investigations into registered cases.

Despite police interventions, pressure groups have reportedly escalated document checks on migrant workers, indicating ongoing tensions and the challenge of maintaining public order in the district.

The East Khasi Hills police continue to monitor the situation closely, aiming to safeguard community harmony and ensure the safety of all residents affected by these actions.
