Meghalaya Government Evacuates 67 Students from Violence-Stricken Bangladesh

Northeast Desk, 19th July: The Meghalaya government has successfully evacuated 67 of its students from Bangladesh amidst escalating violence over a contentious quota system for government jobs. The unrest has led to clashes between student protesters and security officials, resulting in 39 deaths and widespread destruction, including the burning of the state broadcaster’s building.

On July 18, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced proactive measures to ensure the safety of Indian students. The state government, in collaboration with the Bangladesh High Commission and Indian High Commission, has been diligent in providing assistance.

A dedicated team, led by Nodal Officer Hiwot Rymbai (+91 96157 16153) and Assistant Nodal Officer Thomas (+91 84150 60802), is coordinating efforts to assist returning students. Additionally, a helpline number, 1800 345 3644, has been established for further support.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of its students amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh.
