Tripura: Opposition Delegations Prevented from Visiting Gandatwisa Amid Tensions

Northeast Desk, 23rd July: In Tripura’s Dhalai district, two separate delegations from the opposition parties CPI(M) and Congress were stopped from visiting Gandatwisa, where recent violence between two communities resulted in fatalities and widespread destruction.

The CPI(M) delegation, led by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, and the Congress team, headed by state president Asish Kumar Saha, were both denied entry due to prohibitory orders in the area.

The violence began with a brawl on July 7, escalating into a clash that injured several individuals. One of the injured succumbed to their injuries on July 12, leading to further violence in which numerous houses were burned, rendering around 80 families homeless.

The CPI(M) delegation was halted near Amarpur in Gomati district. Chaudhury criticized the decision, stating that the police and administration could not legally prevent them from meeting with the affected people. He mentioned that he had previously received permission from the district magistrate to visit the area.

Similarly, the Congress delegation was stopped near Kalajari in Gomati district. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman condemned the authorities for allowing other delegations, such as those led by Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, to visit the affected families, while denying access to the opposition groups.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chandrajoy Reang justified the decision by citing the prohibitory orders and the need to maintain control after significant efforts to stabilize the situation. Reang emphasized that no risks could be taken at this critical juncture.
