Mizoram: Bhairabi-Sairang Railway Project Nears Completion, Promises Major Boost

Northeast Desk, 23rd July: The Bhairabi-Sairang new line railway project, aimed at linking Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to the national railway network, has achieved over 90 percent physical progress, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Sabyasachi De, announced that 93 percent of the work on the 51.38 km railway line has been completed. Despite facing considerable challenges, such as extended monsoons, tough hilly terrain, limited accessibility, and shortages of construction materials and skilled labor, the NFR is committed to finishing the project as soon as possible.

The project is divided into four sections: Bhairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang, and Mualkhang–Sairang, each involving complex engineering work with numerous tunnels and bridges.

De detailed that the project includes a total of 12,853 meters of tunnels, with 12,807 meters already completed. Additionally, 47 of the 55 major bridges and 87 of the 89 minor bridges have been finished. The construction of the tallest pier near Sairang station, standing at 104 meters tall—42 meters higher than the Qutub Minar—has also been completed.

The project also features five road over-bridges and six road under-bridges. The new railway line will have four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.

Once completed, the Bhairabi-Sairang railway project is expected to revolutionize communication and commerce in Mizoram. “The economical and environment-friendly railway services will have a positive impact on almost all development works in the state,” De stated.

The project aims to substantially reduce transportation costs for passengers and goods, decrease travel time, and boost tourism, thus driving economic growth and development in Mizoram.
