Significant Drop in Dengue Cases Reported in Manipur This Year
Northeast Desk, 24th July: The number of dengue cases in Manipur has seen a substantial decrease this year, with the state confirming only 81 cases compared to last year’s 2,548, according to a recent report from the health department.
Health Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan, addressing a media briefing at the Directorate of Health Services on July 23, highlighted the necessity of collective effort in combating dengue. He stressed the importance of both public support and participation in the health department’s measures to control the outbreak. This year, dengue cases are distributed across various districts: 29 in Imphal West, 20 in Imphal East, 13 in Thoubal, nine in Bishnupur, five in Kakching, three in Chandel, and one in Kangpokpi.
The significant reduction in dengue cases is attributed to various initiatives undertaken by the health department following last year’s overwhelming number of cases. Dr. Ranjan mentioned that the department has implemented comprehensive control measures and emphasized the need for coordination with other departments to ensure effective outcomes. ASHA workers are actively involved in source reduction programs, visiting homes to eliminate stagnant water, which could become breeding spots for mosquitoes.
Community involvement is also a key focus, with discussions underway with the social welfare director to incorporate Anganwadi workers and helpers in monitoring domestic breeding spots. Public awareness campaigns have been ramped up, including activities like fogging, medicating mosquito nets, and sensitization programs through All India Radio. Dr. Ranjan appealed to the public to cover water tanks to prevent mosquito breeding, noting that dengue, once a seasonal issue, is now being reported year-round due to factors such as urbanization and population growth.
Experts have identified urbanization and population growth as key contributors to the rising number of dengue cases. Despite the reduction in cases this year, vigilance remains crucial, as dengue outbreaks have reached peripheral areas and other states over the past decade. Dr. Ranjan assured the public of the health department’s commitment to managing the situation, stating that measures are being taken in collaboration with the State Malaria Officer and other officials to control the outbreak effectively.
The media briefing was attended by Health Services Director Dr. O Sanahanbi, State Mission Director Dr. M Dinesh, and other officials from the Health Department, NHM Manipur, and the Malaria Department. This year’s significant drop in dengue cases reflects the health department’s proactive efforts and the importance of continued public cooperation in combating the disease.
