Tripura Congress President Demands Comprehensive Aid for Unrest Victims

Northeast Desk, 24th July: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Asish Kumar Saha has called for extensive support for victims of the recent unrest in Gandatwisa, Dhalai District. His demands include financial assistance, resettlement aid, and the establishment of security posts in the affected sub-division.

The unrest in Gandatwisa erupted on July 12 following the death of a boy, leading to the destruction of shops and homes. Despite the government’s announcement of relief packages, Saha argues these measures fall short of addressing the full extent of the damage.

At a press conference, Saha detailed the difficulties faced by a Pradesh Congress delegation attempting to assess the situation. “We reached Gandatwisa on July 22 but were still denied access,” he said. “Over 150 families have lost their homes and businesses, now living in relief camps. Their properties were looted, destroyed, and burned. The displaced are reluctant to return due to security concerns.”

Saha criticized the police response, pointing out that despite the presence of 163 personnel from the Border Security Force, violence continued unabated. “The people have lost everything while the police failed to protect them. Houses were torched, livestock stolen, and law enforcement did nothing,” he added.

He also accused the ruling BJP of selectively managing access to the affected areas. “BJP representatives are allowed to visit victims freely, while opposition parties are kept away,” Saha noted. “This suggests an attempt to obscure the truth. The administration’s efforts to exclude opposition parties only underscore the government’s failures.”

Saha reiterated his demands for financial aid, resettlement support, and the creation of security camps to ensure the protection of the affected communities.
