Sikkim: NH10 Set to Reopen for Small Vehicles Following Landslide-Induced Closure
Northeast Desk, 24th July: The National Highway 10 (NH10), connecting Siliguri to Sikkim, is expected to reopen for small vehicles this evening or tomorrow, July 24 or July 25, according to an announcement by the District Magistrate of Kalimpong. The highway had been closed for several days due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.
Landslides occurred at various points along the highway, including the 29th Mile area, Selfie Dara, Birik Dara, and near Melli, leading to the shutdown of this vital transportation route. Although repair work has been ongoing, continuous rainfall in the region has impeded progress.
The reopening of NH10 will bring significant relief to travellers and locals affected by the closure. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to ensure public safety.
Earlier, on July 1, incessant rainfall and multiple landslides in Sikkim resulted in the complete blockade of NH10 near Bagpul, significantly impacting the Coronation Bridge. Consequently, commuters were advised to take the Odlabari – Siliguri route for convenient travel. The recommended alternative route is Odlabari > Teesta Barrage Gajaldoba > Farabari > Asigarh (Eastern Bypass Rd) > Siliguri. This diversion helped minimize delays and ensured a safer journey until NH10 could be cleared.
