Assam Police Reduces Case Backlog by Over 80%, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reports
Guwahati, July 25: The Assam Police Force has made significant strides in reducing its case backlog, according to recent statistics shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The data highlights a dramatic decrease in the average number of cases handled by each investigating officer, resulting in enhanced efficiency and quicker resolution of pending cases.
In 2021, each investigating officer was burdened with an average of 52 cases. By June 2024, this number had dropped to just 7.39 cases per officer. This substantial reduction has enabled officers to allocate more time and resources to each investigation, potentially improving the quality of their work.
The impact on case pendency has been equally remarkable. In 2021, there were 95,994 pending cases within the Assam police system. By June 2024, this figure had plummeted to 18,286, representing a reduction of over 80%.
Chief Minister Sarma credited these improvements to recent modernization efforts within the police force. He emphasized that the reduced caseload has not only alleviated the burden on individual officers but has also benefited the broader community by accelerating the delivery of justice.
“The modernization of our police force has been pivotal in achieving these results. By ensuring that each officer can focus more on individual cases, we have improved both the efficiency and effectiveness of our investigations,” Sarma stated.
The significant reduction in pending cases marks a notable advancement in Assam’s law enforcement capabilities, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing public safety and trust in the justice system.
