Tripura Human Rights Commission Demands Action on Gandatwisa Violence
Northeast Desk, 25th July: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has issued notices to the Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan and Dhalai District Magistrate (DM) Saju Vaheed, seeking reports on the violence in Gandatwisa earlier this month. The rights panel is probing the arson and looting incidents that followed the death of a 19-year-old man during a clash between two groups on July 12.
The THRC has asked both officials to submit detailed reports within three weeks, outlining the actions taken against those involved in the violence.
“Before initiating a formal inquiry, the commission likes to ask for a report from the DGP, Tripura, as to what action has been taken by the law enforcement agencies to nab the offenders of such gusty incident and whether any criminal case has been registered, and if so, under what penal sections and whether any miscreant has been arrested in connection with the alleged offence,” stated Tripura Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice S. C. Das in the notice.
The rights panel also directed the DM to conduct an inquiry through a civil agency and to report on the measures taken to rehabilitate the victims and restore their homes to their original state.
“Inaction or negligence on the part of public servants in preventing the commission of violation of human rights is/are actionable and, therefore, the notices are issued to submit the preliminary report within three weeks for further course of action,” Justice Das added.
The THRC will review the matter on August 8, deciding on the next steps based on the reports from the DGP and DM. This inquiry aims to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and ensure justice and rehabilitation for the affected residents.
