Meghalaya Governor Takes Action on Sexual Assault Case, Pledges Support for Victims

Northeast Desk, 25th July: Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan held a crucial meeting with a delegation led by former minister Dr. KC Boro at Raj Bhavan on July 24 to address a grave case of sexual assault involving two minor tribal girls from the Koch community. The incident, which occurred on April 16 in Ampati, South West Garo Hills District, has ignited widespread outrage and demands for justice.

Dr. Boro, accompanied by members of the Meghalaya Koch Women Welfare Association (MKWWA), presented a memorandum to Governor Chauhan, detailing the assault and its profound impact on the community.

Governor Chauhan expressed deep concern over the incident and announced immediate financial assistance of 50,000 rupees from his discretionary grant to support one of the victims. This action precedes the victims’ request for the maximum compensation of 10 lakh rupees under the Victim Compensation Scheme 2022.

In his address, Governor Chauhan underscored the paramount importance of ensuring safety and security for all citizens, particularly women and children. He committed to engaging with relevant authorities to ensure swift and effective action in pursuing justice for the victims.

The meeting also addressed broader concerns affecting the region’s aggrieved communities. Governor Chauhan highlighted the necessity for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future and pledged his ongoing support to address these critical issues.
