Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Municipal Bodies Over Flood-Related Deaths of Civil Service Aspirants
Guwahati, July 28, 2024 — Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has openly criticized municipal corporations and urban local bodies following the tragic deaths of three civil service aspirants in the basement of a flooded coaching center. Taking to the microblogging site X, Gogoi attributed the incident to the failure of local governance, asserting that such negligence leads to gross injustice.
In his statement, Gogoi also referenced a recent tragedy in Guwahati, where an 8-year-old boy died after being swept away by floodwaters in a roadside drain in Bamunimaidam. He emphasized the need for political leaders to adopt a proactive and hands-on approach to prevent such incidents in the future.
“After the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy in Guwahati in a storm water drain, it is painful to learn about the death of three young students in the basement of a coaching center. Municipal corporations and urban local bodies in India are responsible for local governance, and their failure leads to gross injustice. Political leaders need to be far more active and develop a hands-on approach,” Gogoi wrote on X.
The incident in question occurred on a rainy Saturday in Delhi, where heavy rains caused severe flooding at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar. The victims, Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Nevin Dalwin (28), were trapped in the basement of the coaching center and drowned.
Following the incident, authorities launched a criminal investigation, detaining two individuals and initiating a magisterial inquiry to determine the causes and accountability for the tragedy.
