Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Mandates Vegetarian Meals at Government Functions Amidst Complaints

Guwahati, July 29, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a directive mandating that all District Commissioners serve only vegetarian meals at government functions. This decision, announced on July 29, follows complaints about lavish dining arrangements and aims to enforce austerity in official events.

The new policy also includes a reduction in the number of vehicles in Sarma’s convoy to ten, reflecting his commitment to cutting down on excess and promoting simplicity. This directive follows an earlier reprimand of Nalbari District Commissioner Varnali Deka for serving an elaborate lunch during a state Cabinet meeting in June.

In a formal letter to Deka, Sarma expressed his displeasure, noting that despite previous instructions to provide a simple vegetarian meal, the event included a range of dishes, including multiple fish and meat options. Sarma criticized the deviation from the prescribed guidelines, emphasizing the need for adherence to a more modest and cost-effective approach.
