Assam Chief Minister Urged to Reinstate Muslim Marriage Registration Act Amidst Growing Concerns

Guwahati, July 29, 2024 A memorandum requesting the reinstatement of the Assam Muslim Marriages Act for the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces has been submitted to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The memorandum, presented through the Dhubri district commissioner, addresses growing concerns from the Muslim community regarding recent changes in the registration process.

The document, endorsed by local Qazi Ishak Ali Choudhury, highlights significant difficulties faced by Muslims due to the recent modifications in the marriage and divorce registration process. The local Qazis, who have traditionally handled the registration of Muslim marriages since the Act was first introduced in 1935, have reported widespread issues with the new legislation.

For the past four months, Muslims have struggled to register marriages due to the recent legislative changes. This disruption has complicated compliance with various government regulations and exacerbated community challenges.

The memorandum calls for the reinstatement of the 1935 Muslim Marriage Registration Act, asserting that the old system was effective and well-understood within the community. Qazis are urging the Chief Minister to issue directions for the immediate resumption of marriage registrations under the previous Act and to consider amendments to the current legislation to address the community’s needs.

The Qazis’ appeal underscores the importance of returning to the previously established system to facilitate smoother registration processes and alleviate the difficulties faced by the Muslim community in Assam.
