Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of Corporate Favoritism in Heated Parliament Debate
National Desk, July 29, 2024 — The Monsoon session of Parliament was marked by heightened tensions today as Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, criticized Kiren Rijiju, accusing the government of favoring business tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. Gandhi’s remarks came during a Lok Sabha debate on the Union Budget 2024, where he suggested that corporate giants wield undue influence over government policy decisions.
The ongoing session, which began on July 22, has highlighted sharp divisions between opposition parties and the government. Opposition leaders have criticized the Union Budget 2024 as “discriminatory,” while the government defends it as “visionary.” This debate is expected to continue until August 12, underscoring the significant political and economic discussions shaping the current legislative agenda.
In today’s proceedings, several key activities occurred. Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Pankaj Chaudhary, Shobha Karandlaje, Kirtivardhan Singh, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Sukanta Majumdar, and Harsh Malhotra laid various documents on the table of the Lok Sabha. Additionally, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav moved a motion for the election of two new members to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, as mandated by the Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972.
In the Rajya Sabha, Union ministers Kinjarapu RamMohan Naidu, Rao Inderjit Singh, Shripad Yesso Naik, Shobha Karandlaje, Satish Chandra Dubey, Tokhan Sahu, and Raj Bhushan Choudhary also presented documents. Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced a bill to authorize the payment and appropriation of funds from the Consolidated Fund of Jammu and Kashmir for the fiscal year 2024-25.
These events reflect the intense scrutiny and debate surrounding the Union Budget, as well as the broader political dynamics at play in the current session.
